About

Welcome to Capital City Radio. We are an online radio station that launched in Fall 2009. When we say it’s a labor of love, we mean it. Most of us volunteer time after work and during lunch hours to make Capital City Radio a reality. In addition to drinking the public media Kool-Aid we already serve at WOSU Public Media, we appreciate music and news that goes beyond our and other services in and around Columbus. We know there’s something more out there and thankfully the man agreed (thank you – Tom Rieland).

Committed to not reinventing the wheel of Columbus radio, Capital City Radio offers a great mix of old and new music from NPR/XPoNential Radio, and public media shows, like The Takeaway and The World. Musicians in and around Columbus are featured in a weekly, one-hour show dedicated to music from a musician’s perspective, “Groundswell Columbus,” with host Eric French. Capital Noise is a one-hour weekly preview of the Columbus concert scene, which also features a podcast preview called The Set-List.

Tune to XPoNential Radio and embark on a journey of great music discovery 24/7. With a unique mix of emerging and heritage contemporary musicians, XPoNential serves up an eclectic blend of blues, rock, world, folk, and alternative country. XPoNential Radio is available in HD exclusively on secondary audio channels of participating public radio stations. XPoNential Radio is a service of WXPN in Philadelphia, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music.

BEHIND THE SCENES FOLKS:

michael_rathkeMichael Rathke has been Program Director for WOSU AM and FM since December 2006. Previously, Rathke has been Program Director for NPR affiliates WFCR FM in Amherst, MA, the Northwest Public Radio network based in Pullman, WA, and the former WCAL FM in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN. Rathke has also worked as Music Director for the New Hampshire Public Radio network based in Concord, NH, Operations Director at WNIN FM in Evansville, IN, and Announcer-Producer at WKMS FM in Murray, KY. Away from work, Rathke enjoys cheering for the Minnesota Twins and has been known to travel hundreds of miles to attend Bruce Springsteen concerts.

Eric FrenchEric French keeps himself pretty busy. In addition to hosting Groundswell Columbus, he is also the broadcast technician for WOSU radio, a staff engineer with GBS Records, the guitarist for Hawkline and Greenlawn Abbey, and a motorcycle enthusiast.

jamison packA Columbus lifer, Jamison Pack got into music at a young age (thanks to her older brother). Now that she has a family, Jamison spends equal parts searching for new music and seeking out kids’ music that’s actually enjoyable. In addition to rocking out, Jamison is really digging our new service, “The Takeaway.” Jamison volunteers her time to Capital City Radio blogging and promoting the channel.

Amy JuravichAmy Juravich is a Broadcast Announcer, and is also the Associate Producer of “All Sides with Ann Fisher” on WOSU 820 AM. Amy fell in love with public radio at the age of 19. As a journalism major at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, she was looking for a work-study job that involved communications. Her counselor suggested applying for a newsroom assistant position at WDUQ-FM in Pittsburgh. Amy landed the job mainly because the news director thought she had a “good voice.” But after listening to Morning Edition and All Thing Considered for a few weeks – she was hooked for life! Amy lives in Clintonville with her husband Jon and her dog Rocky. When she is not working on all things public radio, Amy can be found on OSU’s campus studying for her Master’s Degree at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs.

emmaEmma Fete got into radio originally because of a love for indie music. She’s been a Columbus resident for 7 years and has been a broadcast producer with WOSU radio since 2007. Other than loving great conversation and discovering great music (old and new), Emma spends her time riding horses, learning Japanese, practicing karate, and voraciously reading.

scott_gowansWhen Scott Gowans went to high school, he was living under a cloud of naiveté that made him believe that Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Molly Hatchet were people, not groups. Seriously. Since then, his album and CD collection has grown exponentially to include jazz, classical, blues, Broadway, Celtic, world music, and lots of rock, including rare Billy Joel albums and not-for-resale discards from radio stations. He spends most of his time adding content to WOSU’s web sites, including this one, and admiring artists who have interesting things to say about growing older (esp. Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Paul Simon).

andrew-millerGrowing up in southwestern Michigan Andrew Miller was between two great pillars of soul: Chicago and Detroit. Andrew listened to a mixture of AM radio from both cities. He is particularly keen on northern soul stompers from the late 60s and early 70s. In college he sat in on several friends radio shows, and, while living in Detroit and Chicago, he DJ’d clubs and parties spinning soul hits, R&B ballads, noise rock, and a little hip-hop. These days Andrew is as likely to be at the symphony or a folk event as he is to be screaming out the lyrics to Fugazi’s Repeater album from underneath his motorcycle helmet.
