Ingrid Michaelson

Ingrid Michaelson

I have my step sister to thank for my interest in alternative music.  Just a couple of years ago, we would stay up until the wee hours of the morning listening to music and goofing around.  There were many nights where we procrastinated so much that we had to pull all nighters to finish papers due the next day.  All the while, her laptop would be playing the music she had on her iTunes library.  Granted, there was some music I was not interested in at all, there was some that I will never forget.

This past weekend, I graduated from Ohio State and I received a message from my step sister asking me what I wanted as a gift.  I told her I wanted to go see Ingrid Michaelson with her this October and that it would be a great way to relive those crazy times we spent together.  Ingrid Michaelson’s music always has a way of reminding me of what it’s like to be 18 again and still a sophomore in college.

Live Music OVERLOAD and a Capital Noise Update!

22. June 2010 Category Bands, Events, Local Music

Yeah, there’s always live music in your Capital Noise update every week, but this week is truthfully jam-packed.  Not just some live acts; not just a few concerts–TONS.  Seriously.  We weighed them.

First of all, ComFest.  That’s all I have to say about that.

Secondly, all of these.

Thirdly, I am feeling the blues/jazz buzz this week, so I’m picking out two shows that you should definitely acknowledge and perhaps attend.

1. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears @ Newport Music Hall ($12/$14)

Awesome modern funk/blues band, with serious soul.  It’s a good show, and for a totally respectable price.

2. Michael Bublé @ Nationwide Arena ($51.50-$81.50)

Yeah, he might be hitting the pop charts hard with his “Haven’t Met You Yet” single, but he’s up there for a reason.  The talent, the classic songs, the great collaborations–it’s a whole package with Bublé.  Plus, let’s be honest, he’s nice to look at (you were thinking it).  It’s not a cheap ticket, but it’ll be a great show.

ComFest!

22. June 2010 Category Bands, Events, Local Music

It’s ComFest time, y’all. This Friday through Sunday, Goodale Park is overrun with Columbus area food, musicians, artists, and characters.  And if you can put up with the parking headache and the dirty hippies, you’ll be able to enjoy the city’s biggest musical festival of the year.

There are boatloads of bands to choose from, but the one I’ll be most excited to see is Super Desserts.

The group is a sprawling folk/twee/pop outfit with a rotating cast of over a dozen players. On any given performance you’ll get the chance to hear banjo, glockenspiel, trombone, ukulele or a small string orchestra section. They specialize in crafting sweet little pop songs meant to stay in your head and break your heart. They’ll be performing on the Bozo Stage (I don’t understand the name either) this Saturday. Their cuteness will soften the blow of having cheap beer spilled on you all day.

This video comes from a live performance of their unbelievably catchy track, “I Only Love You Because You Can Play Guitar” from their album Banjo Forever released earlier this year.

I’m no Sherlock Holmes

3. June 2010 Category Bands, CD Review

oberhofer-480x320

Oberhofer is infectious. This one-man band from Brooklyn got his start in 2006 and since then has been producing rough, poppy home recordings and touring small clubs and venues in New York.

I can’t find downloadable or purchasable music of his anywhere. His nearly unpronounceable album title (o0Oo0Oo) makes it even harder. From the buzz around the interwebs, it seems as though others are having similar troubles. Even Pitchfork, the hipster music bastion, doesn’t have a single write-up on him. This still, grainy video is the best I can do for you. I urge you to look around for whatever you can find on him.  He’s definitely worth the detective work.

Mega Band Domination

1. June 2010 Category Bands

I might be a little behind, but I’ve noticed something lately. It’s the formation of mega bands. That’s not an official term, but I think it’s fitting. Members of already popular bands are getting together and creating supergroups (that is the official term, but I like mega band better). Packed with extreme awesomeness, these bands gather some of the greatest performers and create one mind blowing act. Supergroups have been around for years; I just never paid much attention to them, or even realized that they were comprised of already seasoned musicians.

Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones make up mega band Them Crooked Vultures

Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones make up the supergroup known as Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures is the most recent supergroup to be gaining popularity. Made up of Dave Grohl, lead singer of the Foo-Fighters, John Paul Jones, bassist of legendary rock group Led Zeppelin, and Josh Homme, front man of Queens of the Stone Age, they are establishing themselves quite nicely in the music community. But honestly, who would criticize a band consisting of a member of Led Zeppelin? Their first single was “New Fang” , and it’s rockin’.

Tinted Windows is another group that caught my attention. They’ve been together for a couple of years and include James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne and Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick. It’s kind of an odd combination, a kid from Hanson in a group with a member of Cheap Trick? Taylor’s not so little anymore though, and their music is really good. I suggest “Messing With My Head.” Plus, part of the beauty of supergroups is the teaming up of artists who you would never expect to see together.

Jack White, originally of the White Stripes, can’t seem to get enough of forming bands. First it was The Raconteurs. He was the only big name of the group, but now he has moved on to a mega band. He formed The Dead Weather with, Alison Mosshart of the Kills, Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs, and Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age.  Their first single was “Die By The Drop.”

Of course, this business of swapping band members has been going on for awhile. Take for example Traveling Wilburys. They were one of the original mega bands, made up of George Harrison of The Beatles, Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra. To see all of those guys playing together had to be amazing.

This link is to a Wikipedia page with a list of supergroups since 1966. Supergroups In some cases the supergroups became more successful than the members’ previous bands.

Civil Twilight- You Should Check ‘Em Out

30. April 2010 Category Bands, CD Review

Civil Twilight's debut album cover

I have enjoyed the music of Civil Twilight for several years now but only recently, April 6 to be exact, did they finally release their self titled debut album to stores. It has been available on iTunes for a year or so, but the new album includes 3 previously unreleased songs.

Maybe it’s me, but there’s something special about owning an actual copy of a CD, which is why I’m excited about the release. Looking at the album’s booklet and simply being able to hold it in your hands will always win over the downloaded version in my book. Anyhow, back to the important stuff.

The band Civil Twilight hails from Cape Town, South Africa and is comprised of 3 members. Brothers Steven (vocals, keyboard, piano, bass guitar) and Andrew (guitar) McKellar who are joined by their friend Richard Wouters (drums, percussion) have been playing music since their teenage years . Their music takes on a very mellow and thought provoking feel. I always find myself not wanting the beautiful melodies to end. But as one song finishes a song of equal greatness follows. The opener, “Anybody Out There”, really captures the listener with pleading shouts from Steven, asking if anybody’s out there in times of loneliness.

The simplicity of the music is what really sets the band apart. The highlighted piano in many of their songs, such as in the beginning of “Letters From the Sky”, is so perfect and pure. The album also includes more upbeat tunes such as “Soldier”, but overall there is a quiet and somewhat sorrowful character behind each song that draws you right in. It’s a mysterious sound and you want to learn more.

Chances are not many of you, if any, have heard of Civil Twilight. But maybe you’re familiar with some of their songs? If you have heard any it’s most likely to have been either “Human”, which was featured on an episode of House, “Quiet In My Town”, which played during an episode of One Tree Hill, or “Save Yourself” which played during this week’s season premiere of The Hills. Other than these small song snippets in the background of shows, the band has yet to receive the exposure they deserve. However, they are movin’ on up! They are currently touring across the country and performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live this past Tuesday, April 27.

Civil Twilight on Jimmy Kimmel Live

So, if you’re looking for a laid back listen I highly suggest Civil Twilight. A+ to them!

Give us some money

22. December 2009 Category Bands, Video

When I was small I believed in Santa Claus
Though I knew it was my dad
And I would hang up my stocking at Christmas
Open my presents and I’d be glad

But the last time I played Father Christmas
I stood outside a department store
A gang of kids came over and mugged me
And knocked my reindeer to the floor

They said:
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don’t mess around with those silly toys.
We’ll beat you up if you don’t hand it over
We want your bread so don’t make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Don’t give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don’t give my sister a cuddly toy
We don’t want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy

Father Christmas, give us some money
We’ll beat you up if you make us annoyed
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don’t mess around with those silly toys

But give my daddy a job ’cause he needs one
He’s got lots of mouths to feed
But if you’ve got one, I’ll have a machine gun
So I can scare all the kids down the street

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We’ll beat you up if you don’t hand it over
We want your bread so don’t make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Have yourself a merry merry Christmas
Have yourself a good time
But remember the kids who got nothin’
While you’re drinkin’ down your wine

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
Father Christmas, please hand it over
We’ll beat you up, so don’t make us annoyed

Don’t know much about these guys, but I’m still digging this tune.
