Live from Newport, R.I., this weekend! NPR Music, WFUV, Folk Alley and mvyradio will be webcasting all day Saturday and Sunday at the Newport Folk Festival, and you can follow the action at npr.org/newportfolk. Until the webcast begins on Saturday morning, you can find an 84-song festival preview stream and archived sets from last year’s concerts:
And if that’s not enough, how about some jazz from Newport, featuring Branford Marsalis, Dave Brubek and Esperanza Spalding.
Looking for a dose of pure 80’s rock goodness? Scorpions are coming to town with Cinderella for an outdoor performance at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion. Rain or shine, the show goes down this Wednesday, June 30.
Bring your leather vest. Relive your glory days. Or maybe you can take that weird uncle of yours who still brags about his collection of Quiet Riot records.
And come on. You know you wanna hear “Rock You Like a Hurricane” live. Don’t even try to lie.
Yeah, there’s always live music in your Capital Noise update every week, but this week is truthfully jam-packed. Not just some live acts; not just a few concerts–TONS. Seriously. We weighed them.
First of all, ComFest. That’s all I have to say about that.
Yeah, he might be hitting the pop charts hard with his “Haven’t Met You Yet” single, but he’s up there for a reason. The talent, the classic songs, the great collaborations–it’s a whole package with Bublé. Plus, let’s be honest, he’s nice to look at (you were thinking it). It’s not a cheap ticket, but it’ll be a great show.
It’s ComFest time, y’all. This Friday through Sunday, Goodale Park is overrun with Columbus area food, musicians, artists, and characters. And if you can put up with the parking headache and the dirty hippies, you’ll be able to enjoy the city’s biggest musical festival of the year.
The group is a sprawling folk/twee/pop outfit with a rotating cast of over a dozen players. On any given performance you’ll get the chance to hear banjo, glockenspiel, trombone, ukulele or a small string orchestra section. They specialize in crafting sweet little pop songs meant to stay in your head and break your heart. They’ll be performing on the Bozo Stage (I don’t understand the name either) this Saturday. Their cuteness will soften the blow of having cheap beer spilled on you all day.
This video comes from a live performance of their unbelievably catchy track, “I Only Love You Because You Can Play Guitar” from their album Banjo Forever released earlier this year.
NPR travels to Manchester, TN June 10-13 for live coverage of the annual Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival. We will be webcasting live from the main stages, featuring dozens of performances from artists such as Flaming Lips, The xx, The Gossip, Tori Amos, LCD Soundsystem and Jay-Z (depending on permissions).
The live webcast will stream from Jun 11-13 from noon ET – 2 am ET each day. Share the live webcast on your website via a Bonnaroo branded module that will carry the live stream and update automatically artist and scheduling information. When not in live coverage, the module will feature our Bonnaroo Mix, a continuous stream of over 100 songs from the artists featured at the festival this year.
Okay, so most people hear Akira Kurosawa and are flooded with black and white images of samurai. Fair enough. But Kurosawa was an amazing filmmaker, whether you’ve only seen the samurai or more of his impressive repertoire.
Toshiro Mifune starred in 16 of Kurosawa's films, including Seven Samurai, Rashoman, Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, and Yojimbo.
It’s also a bit of a Toshiro Mifune celebration, who acted in 16 of Kurosawa’s films, and appears in all of the Wexner series other than Sugata Sanshiro.
So, get ready for some of the most beautiful, innovative films that defined, and continue to influence, filmmaking for decades.
And as a quick side note, if you’re interested in more of Kurosawa’s non-samurai films, I would suggest checking out Ikiru. It’s one of my all time favorite films.
Take, for instance, a festival! That’s right–festival season is upon us. The great outdoors, the food, the music, the mud, the smelly hippies…okay, well, good and bad, festivals are a staple of summer. This weekend is the Hookahville 33, organized by the ubiquitous Columbus favorites, Ekoostik Hookah. It starts on Friday and runs through Sunday, and CN highlighted two of the over 20 bands that will play: Donna the Buffalo and Michael Franti and Spearhead. The festival runs the genres, but there’s guaranteed to be some awesome jamming.
For old school fans, there’s also the epic reunion tour of James Taylor and Carole King. The “Troubadour Reunion Tour” is in honor of when King and Taylor used to play at Troubadour club in LA, known for supporting singer/songwriters in the 60s and 70s. There’s not a whole lot I can add, so instead, here’s a video circa 1971 of James Taylor’s chart-toppingly successful cover of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” (That’s King playing the piano in the background).
A friend pointed out this video, prefacing it by saying that Bruce should never travel without the E-Street Band.
The description from the Huffington Post is succinct: It sounds more like a bizarre dream than reality, but concert-goers at Carnegie Hall can attest to the fact that it really happened.
On Thursday, Bruce Springsteen, Lady GaGa, Elton John, Sting, Blondie’s Deborah Harry, and Shirley Bassey of James Bond fame, sang Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The performance, a finale to the annual benefit for the Rainforest Fund drew wild applause.
